Durability, cost, appearance, installation time, environmental impact and maintenance — compared point by point.
Two roofing materials cover most of what gets installed. Here is how they actually compare, category by category.
Durability and longevity
Metal: known for exceptional durability and life. A well-maintained metal roof lasts 40 to 70 years. It resists cracking, warping and shrinking, and holds up in extreme weather.
Shingles: traditional asphalt shingles typically last 15 to 30 years. They handle moderate weather but wear faster under UV, high wind and heavy storms, and they suffer moss growth and granule loss as they age.
Winner: metal, for longevity.
Cost
Metal: a higher upfront cost — typically two to three times shingles — but factor in the lifespan. Over time, durability and low maintenance can make it the cheaper roof.
Shingles: much more affordable initially, with significantly lower installation costs. But the shorter life and more frequent repairs add up.
Winner: shingles upfront; metal over the life of the building.
Aesthetics
Metal: a sleek, modern look, available in a range of styles, colors and finishes to suit anything from contemporary to rustic.
Shingles: the most common material, available in many colors and textures. Versatile, but without the premium look of metal.
Winner: metal, for a premium modern finish.
Installation time
Metal: generally takes longer, especially with custom panels — typically a few days depending on size and complexity.
Shingles: quicker and less complicated. A professional crew can shingle a modest building in a couple of days, and a larger roof scales from there.
Winner: shingles, for speed.
Environmental impact
Metal: highly eco-friendly. Usually made from recycled material and fully recyclable at end of life, and its reflective properties reduce cooling costs.
Shingles: made from petroleum products and less recyclable, contributing to landfill. Some manufacturers are working on alternatives, but they are not widespread.
Winner: metal.
Maintenance
Metal: minimal. Occasional cleaning and inspection. Resistant to moss, mold and algae.
Shingles: more, especially with age — replacing damaged or missing shingles, clearing gutters, checking for moss and algae.
Winner: metal.
Fire and storm resistance
Metal: highly fire resistant, and more effective against strong wind and heavy storms — a good choice in areas that get severe weather.
Shingles: can be treated with fire-resistant coatings but are generally more vulnerable, especially in dry conditions, and less resistant to wind and hail.
Winner: metal.
In summary
Choose metal if you want long-term durability, low maintenance, fire and storm resistance, and a modern, eco-friendly appearance.
Choose shingles if you are working to a budget and need a quicker, more affordable installation with a lower upfront cost.
